Shuren

The meaning of Shuren is “training” or “discipline.” The word carries a strong connotation of serious training. The first character “shu” can also be read as: “asamaru” and means to hold firmly. “Ren” can also be read as “neru,” meaning to knead or polish. This is a fine example of the figurative and symbolic aspects of the use of “Kanji,” the Chinese characters adopted into the Japanese written language.

There are several other words that also can be used for training. “Renshu,” “Keiko,””Kunren,” are the most often used. But the word Shuren - the polishing and kneading of one’s spirit, forging it into something strong and bright through sincere and dedicated training – is the word O-Sensei chose for his dojo, and I am proud to use it, with Saito Sensei’s blessing, for mine.
